Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Black Mountain Lookout stands on the Clearwater National Forest in Clearwater County, Idaho, at about 7,077 feet.1,2

According to the register, the site dates back to the 1930s.1 Kamstra's page and Idaho Fire Lookouts date an L-4 cab on the site to 1932.2,3 A 10-foot concrete base was built in 1952 under that cab.2,3 In 1972 an R-6 flat cab took the place of the L-4 cab on that same base.2,3 The register gives 1972 as the build year for the present structure, describes it as a 14-by-14-foot modified R-6 flattop cab with catwalk, and calls it the site's third structure.1

Idaho Fire Lookouts places older patrol towers about one mile southwest and two miles south.3

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists known staff starting in 1963.3 Kamstra's page says summer staffing continues.2 The same site reports that the tower is currently staffed, in a September 2025 article.3

The register added the lookout on April 6, 2009.1 It lists the tower as in active service under the U.S. Forest Service, with the North Fork Ranger District as cooperator.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts describes the visit as hike-in.3 The pages read do not describe visiting rules or trail conditions, so anyone planning a hike should check with the North Fork Ranger District first.

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1972
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1952

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
