View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Bluff, also listed as Bluff (Dominion), had an L-4 cab in 1935.1 It stood in the St. Joe National Forest, in Shoshone County, Idaho.1,2

A patrol tower stood two miles south, atop Dominion Point.1,3 Two sources say the cab was destroyed in 1956.1,3 A third lists the site as gone that year.4

The Dominion name also belongs to a lookout called Dominion Peak, which sat on the state line according to a 1933 newspaper item quoted on the Shoshone County list. That site is listed in another township, so it is a separate lookout.4

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as a hike-in.3 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the ground is open to the public.
