View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Boehls Butte Lookout stood about 10 miles northeast of Elk River in Clearwater County, Idaho, at an elevation of 3,610 feet.1 Firelookout.com dates it to 1934, when it was a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab.1 The Idaho Fire Lookouts site gives the same 1934 build and tower type.2

An aerial photograph in the Archives West collection carries the caption "Beohls Butte Lookout," spelled that way in the catalogue, and is dated 1936.3

The Forest Lookouts site quotes a 1953 annual report from the Potlatch Timber Protective Association, which says the tower was fully rebuilt that year.4

The tower was destroyed in 1972.1,2

No source I read describes what, if anything, remains at the site now, and none says whether the public may visit it today. The Idaho Fire Lookouts page tags the site as a drive-up site.2
