View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Boundary Peak Lookout sat about 15 miles southeast of Pierce, in Idaho County, on the Clearwater National Forest.1,2 The site is listed at 5,243 feet.1

The lookout was built in 1934 as a 20-foot L-4 tower on the peak's northeast point.1,2 The Forest Service's list of Clearwater lookouts describes an L-4 cabin for the same year instead.3

The ending is disputed. Two lookout-history pages say the lookout was abandoned in the 1950s and was gone by 1964.1,2 The Forest Service list says it burned in 1954.3 The sources do not reconcile the two accounts.

Idaho Fire Lookouts files the site as drive-up.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the tower as gone.4 No source we read says what, if anything, remains on the site today, or whether the road to it is still open.1,2
