View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Bussel Peak's lookout was a 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, built in 1938 on the St. Joe National Forest, about 23 miles southeast of St. Maries in Shoshone County.1,2 The site sits at 4,473 feet.1

A post by Idaho Fire Lookouts, dated October 29, 2024, describes what the writers found there.2 They report the year 1939 written in the cement of the footings, even though the lookout is recorded as built in 1938.2 They also found two names written in the cement of another footing.2 The writers are confident the two men were part of a Civilian Conservation Corps crew in the St. Joe National Forest in 1939, but they could not identify them.2

Idaho Fire Lookouts has no documented staffing history for Bussel Peak.2

Both sources say the tower was destroyed in 1958. Neither gives a cause.1,2

On the visit described in that post, the writers found footings, remnants of a wood stove, a lot of wire and two benchmarks. The writers say more writing in the cement may once have existed in other spots, but time and weather have worn it to illegibility.2

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as gone.3 Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the site hike-in and destroyed.2 The Idaho Fire Lookouts page does not say whether the land is open to the public.2
