View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Buzzard Roost began as a camp in 1919, about 20 miles south-southeast of Avery in Shoshone County, Idaho.1,2

The site got an L-4 cab in 1935.1,2 The sources place its crow's nest two miles east, atop Mulligan Hump, on the St. Joe National Forest.1,2

Idaho Fire Lookouts has no documented staffing history for the site.2

Both sources date its destruction to 1954, and neither describes how it was destroyed.1,2

Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the site drive-up. That describes how to reach it, and the page does not say whether the land is open to visitors.2

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists Buzzard Roost as a ground lookout that is gone.3 The pages we read do not describe what, if anything, remains on the site today.
