View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Carrill Peak Lookout stood on the peak about eight miles south-southeast of Coeur d'Alene, in Kootenai County and the Coeur d'Alene National Forest.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association places the site at 47.54074, -116.68100.2 The site's elevation is listed as 4,098 feet.3

Records give 1936 for the tower, which was 40 feet tall and had an L-4 cab, though one list marks that year as approximate.1,3,4 The Kemnow list gives the location as section 35 of township 49 North, range 3 West, and credits both dates to a source it names only as Kresek.4

Sources put the tower's destruction in 1947, and one of the lists marks that date as approximate.1,3,4 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the structure as gone.2

No source describes what, if anything, remains on the peak. Idaho Fire Lookouts files the site under drive-up, but none of the pages I read says whether the ground is open to visitors.3
