View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Cascade Point Lookout sat in the St. Joe National Forest, about 1.5 miles west of Cascade Peak and eight miles east of Red Ives G.S., in Shoshone County, Idaho.1

Its listed elevation is 6,084 feet.1,2

The lookout went up in 1935 as a 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab.1,2 One county list gives the pole as 20 feet, so the height is in dispute.3

It was destroyed in 1961, according to the firelookout.com and Idaho pages.1,2 A county list also has it gone by 1961,3 and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the tower as gone.4

The Idaho site labels the location a drive-up site.2 None of the sources describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether it is open to the public.
