View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Columbia Ridge Lookout stood 16 miles southwest of Elk City, in the Nez Perce National Forest, at 7,861 feet.1,2,3

The lookout was a 50-foot pole L-4 tower, built about 1933.1,2,3 The Idaho Fire Lookouts page labels the site drive-up, so the tower could once be reached by road.2

The tower was knocked over in 1963, and the sources give that year as its destruction date.1,2,3 One header on firelookout.com gives the span as 1933 to 1965, which disagrees with the 1963 date used elsewhere on that page and in the other two sources.1 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the tower as gone.4

No source I read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether it is open to the public. Check with the Nez Perce National Forest before visiting the area.
