View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Continental Mountain, in Boundary County, Idaho, carried a fire lookout built about 1938. It was a 50-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, on a peak about 10 miles north of Upper Priest Lake in the Kaniksu National Forest, at an elevation of 6,677 feet.1,2

The tower no longer stands.1,2 Idaho Fire Lookouts says no date for its removal or destruction has been recorded.1 Rex Kamstra's listing describes the tower as one that has since departed, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks it as gone.2,3

No source describes what, if anything, is left on the peak today, and none says whether the site is open to visitors.1,2,4 Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the site "Hike-In," which describes how it is reached rather than whether it is open.1 Ron Kemnow's Forest Lookouts page gives only the forest and the legal location, township 65 North, range 5 West, section 36.4 Check with the Kaniksu National Forest before planning a trip to the peak.
