View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Cook Mountain, about 25 miles east-northeast of Pierce in Clearwater County, Idaho, began as a tree-top lookout in 1917.1 Ron Kemnow's listing credits Paul Wohlen with building it, citing a Clearwater National Forest history, and describes a platform set on two trees cut to about 15 feet.2

A 25-foot tree platform is listed for 1919, and an L-4 cab appears by 1941.3,1,4 The Forest Service's Clearwater list gives the lookout's elevation as 6,534 feet.4

Idaho Fire Lookouts, Rex Kamstra and the Forest Service list all give 1963 as the year the lookout was abandoned, and the Forest Service list calls it gone.3,1,4 Ron Kemnow's page says it was removed, without a date.2

The sources differ on what kind of lookout it was. The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list still classes Cook Mountain as a ground lookout, while the Forest Service list and the Idaho and Rex Kamstra pages describe tree platforms.5,4,3,1

No source describes what remains at the site today, or whether the ground is open to visitors. Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the site "Hike-In," which describes how it is reached rather than whether it is open.3
