View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Cooperation Point lookout stood about eight miles southwest of Powell Ranger Station, in Idaho County on the Clearwater National Forest, at an elevation of 6,785 feet.1

The name may point to shared work. A place-name note in the Clearwater forest history says the Lolo Forest built a lookout on the point to watch for fires in the Warm Springs area, working with the Clearwater.2 That note calls the peak "Cooperation Mountain," so the match with this point is likely but not certain.

The tower was a pole structure with an L-4 cab, dated to 1934.1,3

Four lookout pages and lists give 1950 as the year it was destroyed.1,3,4,5 One Idaho page tags the site "Abandoned" in its header, but the history on the same page also says destroyed in 1950.3

No source I found describes what, if anything, remains on the point today, or whether the ground is open to visitors.
