View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Cougar Creek Lookout was an L-4 cab on a 10-foot log crib, built in 1934 on Challis National Forest land in Custer County, Idaho, about 34 miles northwest of Challis.1,2,3 An earlier log cabin on the site is dated to about 1930 by one account, and that same account says the 1934 cab sat atop a first floor of log cribbing.3
On August 28, 1937, a newspaper item said CCC enrollees were working on a truck trail to the lookout, through what it called Idaho's primitive area.3
A May 1965 report in The Post-Register said the lookout had last been used in 1942 and had since become a public safety hazard and a potential fire source.3 A ranger reported that the building, with its weakened sides and broken windows, would soon be taken down and the site restored.3
All three sites date the lookout's destruction to 1967.1,2,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list also marks it gone.4
No source describes what, if anything, remains at the site today.1,2,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts lists it as a hike-in site and gives no route or distance.2 The site sits on Challis National Forest land, and no source states an access rule.1,2
