View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Daveggio Knob is a lookout site on the St. Joe National Forest, in Shoshone County, Idaho, at 5,882 feet.1,2 Records list a camp there in 1939, and an L-4 cab with a patrol point on the northwest ridge in 1942.1,2

Both sources give 1963 as the year the lookout was destroyed.1,2 Idaho Fire Lookouts labels the entry drive-in and destroyed or removed. The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the site as a ground lookout that is gone.2,3

A June 2025 post on Idaho Fire Lookouts describes a visit to the site. The writers found a road blocked by a tangle of fallen timber, so they parked and hiked up.2 They found all four footings, plus other debris such as wire and metal pieces.2 At the patrol point, they could see no trace of its earlier use.2

We found no source that says whether the site is open to the public.
