View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Dent Point lookout was a 1933 L-4 tower on the Nez Perce National Forest, about nine miles northeast of Elk City.1,2 The Idaho Fire Lookouts page puts the site at 6,285 feet.2 Both pages also mention a patrol lookout about two miles west-northwest, on Green Ridge. The wording does not say whether that was this tower or a separate station.1,2

The tower was abandoned in 1950.1,2 Both pages now list it as gone.1,2 The FFLA's Idaho list records it the same way and gives its coordinates as 45.91632, -115.30606.3

No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today. The Idaho Fire Lookouts page labels it a hike-in site, so it is reached on foot rather than by road.2
