View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Devil Peak lookout site lies in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest, about 11 miles east-southeast of Lakeview.1 The Idaho Fire Lookouts page gives its elevation as 4,616 feet.2 A camp was set up there in 1931.1,2 In 1934 an L-4 cab went up at the north end of the site.1,2 The lookout was destroyed in 1947.1,2

The FFLA's Idaho list places the site in Shoshone County, gives its type as Ground and marks it gone.3

A July 2023 note on the Idaho Fire Lookouts page says little is left to see beyond concrete footings for the tower.2 The list says gone, while the 2023 note describes footings, so the two sources differ on what remains.2,3 The page labels the site hike-in.2 No other source we read describes the site today.
