View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Dodge Peak is in Boundary County, Idaho, on the Kaniksu National Forest, about 14 miles southwest of Bonners Ferry.1,2 Firelookout.com gives its elevation as 5,027 feet.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts files the site under its Northern Idaho region.3

The lookout was a 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, dated to 1933.1,3 Both pages also describe a separate 35-foot patrol tower, with a log cabin on top, on Green Mountain 1.5 miles to the south-southwest.1,3

Both sources give 1955 as the year the lookout was destroyed.1,3

No source describes what remains on the peak today. Idaho Fire Lookouts files Dodge Peak as a hike-in site, so a visitor would need to walk in, but the page does not say whether the public can reach the summit now.3
