View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Double Creek Ridge lookout went up in 1934 as an L-4 cab, set on a 20-foot tower.1,2 The Nez Perce National Forest's list of its lookouts places the tower about 10 miles northeast of the Moose Creek Ranger Station.3 The same list gives its legal location as township 33 north, range 13 east, section 2.3

The Bitterroot National Forest administered the site first.1 In 1957 the administration passed to the Nez Perce National Forest.1 The lookout was destroyed in about 1951.1,2,4,3 Forest Lookouts credits that date to Ray Kresek, and the Nez Perce list draws on Kresek's book as well.1,3 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the site as a tower that is gone.5

None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the ridge is open to visitors.1,2,4,3,5
