Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Eagle Point stands in Clearwater County, Idaho, about four miles southeast of the Canyon Ranger Station.1 The first structure on the site was a two-story log cabin, built in 1935.2,1 In 1955 a 41-foot treated timber tower with an L-4 cab took its place.1,3

The current cab is an R-6 flat top, built in 1973 on an open timber tower that stands 41 feet tall.2,1 A 1959 Coast and Geodetic Survey description, quoted on a lookout-history site, says the Forest Service owns the tower and gives its height as 41 feet.4

In the 1980s the lookout stopped being staffed every season and moved to emergency use.3,1 The register says it is still occasionally staffed during emergencies.2

The sources disagree on elevation. The register gives 5,548 feet (1,691 m), while firelookout.com gives 5,709 feet.2,1 The register added Eagle Point in December 2020 as US 1467, ID 159.2

I could not find a source that says whether visitors may go up the tower, so check with the Forest Service before planning a visit.
