View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Eagle Rock, in Valley County on the Payette National Forest, was a camp in the 1920s.1,2 Before the cabin, the lookout lived in a tent, and an alidade (a surveyor's sighting tool) was set on a rock.2

In 1934 the ground was blasted and leveled, and a standard L-4 lookout house was packed in and put up.2 Firelookout.com calls the 1934 structure a cabin.1

The house stood until 1951, when both pages record it as destroyed.1,2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association list also marks the site as gone.3

None of the three sources describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or says whether it is open to the public, so check with the Payette National Forest before going.1,2,3
