View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

East Elk Lookout was a cupola cabin built in 1931 in Clearwater County, Idaho.1,2 The sites list its elevation at 5,720 feet.1,2 The firelookout.com page places it 11 miles east of what it calls Headquarters.1 Both pages carry the initials CTPA.1,2 The Elk Butte page on the same site names the Clearwater-Potlatch Timber Protective Association, which is probably what the initials stand for.1,2,3 The Idaho Fire Lookouts site lists one known staff member, Bill Bailey, for 1933, at what it calls the Columbia Breaks Fire Center.2 No second source confirms that entry. The cabin was abandoned in 1961, and both pages list it as gone.1,2 Neither page describes what remains at the site today.1,2 The Idaho site files the lookout among its drive-up sites.2
