View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Echo Peak sits in Kootenai County, Idaho, within the Coeur d'Alene National Forest.1,2,3 In 1934 a pole tower with an L-4 cab went up on the peak.1,4 The sources disagree on the tower's height: two give a 40-foot pole, while the Forest Lookouts page gives 30 feet.1,4,2
The Idaho Fire Lookouts site says it has no record yet of who staffed the tower.4
In 1946 the L-4 cab moved to Twin Crags Lookout, a separate site in the same county.1,4,2,3 One account says the whole 20-foot pole tower moved with it.5 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks the Echo Peak tower as gone.3 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the Echo Peak site today.
A farmer bought the cab in 1963.5 A page about the Twin Crags tower says that in 2025 it was still standing with no cab.5 The Association's list calls the Twin Crags tower ruins, so the sources disagree about what stands there now.3
Anyone planning a visit to Echo Peak should ask the Coeur d'Alene National Forest about access first.
