View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Elk Ridge lookout sat on the Idaho-Montana border in the Kaniksu National Forest, about nine miles southeast of Clark Fork in Bonner County, at 5,020 feet.1

The site started in 1936 with a pole platform and a tent.1,2,3 In 1940 a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab replaced that camp.1,3

Idaho Fire Lookouts has not yet recorded who staffed this lookout.2 A 1948 item from the Sandpoint News-Bulletin, quoted on the Forest Lookouts page, says three men spent a Tuesday at the lookout in August 1948.3

The tower came down in the 1950s.1,3 Firelookout.com says it was removed, while the Forest Lookouts page, citing Kresek, says it was destroyed.1,3

Idaho Fire Lookouts describes the site as largely forgotten.2 The main remains are concrete piers and embedded eye hooks.2 No source says whether the site is open to the public.1,2,3 The Idaho listing calls it a hike-in site.2
