What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Faset Peak Lookout stood in Bonner County on the Coeur d'Alene National Forest, about 6 miles southeast of Lakeview, at an elevation of 5,246 feet.1,2 A log cabin and a 48-foot pole tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab went up in 1931.1,2,3 L-4 cab living quarters were added in 1943.1,2
In 1954 a steel tower was moved to the summit from Copper Mountain.1,3 In 1963 a 53-foot treated timber tower with an R-6 cab was built.1,2,3 The sources list known lookout personnel from 1948 to 1972.1,2
The R-6 tower moved to Black Mountain in 1975, according to firelookout.com and the Weebly page. The Idaho Fire Lookouts page for Black Mountain gives 1976 for the same move.1,3,4 The NHLR record also says 1975.5 The log cabin burned in a forest fire in the 2010s.1,2 The sources give only the decade.1,2
Idaho Fire Lookouts, in a post dated November 9, 2024, says the summit is still reachable by vehicle and is a popular spot for single-track and ATV riders.2 The post notes that the summit's electrical gear now serves as an electronic site. It also lists remnants of the cabin: some logs, hinges, stove pipe, footings, and an outhouse foundation and vault.2 No source here says whether the summit is restricted, and the tower itself is no longer on the site.2,3
The tower's new home is Black Mountain Lookout in Boundary County.4,5 The NHLR record says the tower was moved in 2019 to a spot about half a mile east-northeast of its earlier Black Mountain site, and that it was to be added to a recreational rental program.4,5 No source here says whether that plan went ahead.4,5
