Story

Researched 4 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Gardiner Peak Lookout stands above the Selway River in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, on the shared boundary of the Nez Perce and Bitterroot National Forests in central Idaho.1,2 Fire detection on the peak goes back to 1925, when crews built an L-3 cupola cabin on a 5-foot log crib.1 That structure was replaced in 1953 with the lookout that stands today: a standard 1936-pattern L-4 cab with a catwalk, set on a 10-foot wooden tower.1,2

The site has a long roster of known staff. Al Koenigs is recorded staffing the tower in the mid-to-late 1920s, and Tommy Reed is recorded there in 1956; Lawrence Gilley is recorded staffing it as recently as 2010.3 Unlike many of Idaho's retired lookouts, Gardiner Peak has stayed in active service — the National Historic Lookout Register describes it as "regularly staffed for fire detection."1

The lookout's historic value was formally recognized in 2009, when it was added to the National Historic Lookout Register as listing US 787.1 It later gained federal recognition as well, going onto the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.4

Because Gardiner Peak remains a working fire lookout, it is not a public rental like many retired towers; it is reached by hiking in, and visitors should treat it as an active Forest Service facility rather than overnight lodging. The surrounding wilderness designation also means no mechanized access, so reaching the peak takes a genuine backcountry trip.
