View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Goblin Knob Lookout stood in Boundary County, Idaho, about nine miles east-northeast of Nordman, at an elevation of 6,606 feet.1,2 Forest Lookouts lists the Priest Lake Timber Protective Association as the agency.3

The cab was a gabled L-4 design, built in 1931.1,2

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists two known staff members: Juell Turley in 1933, and Lawerence Olsen in 1938, spelled that way in the source.2

The cab was destroyed in 1972.1,2 Forest Lookouts marks the site as gone in the same year.3 It lists the site under Boundary County, with the code 61N-3W-5.3 Rex's page and the Idaho Fire Lookouts site both credit the Fire Lookout Museum for the lookout's photographs.1,2

None of the three listings we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site today, or whether the site is open to visitors.1,2,3
