View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Gold Peak is a lookout site on Kaniksu National Forest land, about three miles northwest of Upper Priest Lake in Bonner County, Idaho.1 Rex Kamstra's page lists its elevation at 4,534 feet.1

The first facility, in the 1920s, was a tent camp with a 20-foot platform.1,2,3 In 1934 a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab replaced it.1,3 Ron Kemnow's Forest Lookouts page also lists a 40-foot platform patrol tower about three-quarters of a mile northeast, in the same 1934 entry.3

Kamstra's page and Kemnow's page both give 1966 as the year the tower was destroyed.1,3 Idaho Fire Lookouts files the lookout under drive-up.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list marks the tower as gone.4 None of the pages I checked describes what remains at the site today or whether the ground is open to visitors.
