View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Granite Mountain is a lookout site on Kaniksu National Forest land, about four miles north of Nordman in Bonner County, Idaho.1 Rex Kamstra's firelookout.com page puts its elevation at 4,780 feet.1
A cabin came first, in 1932.1,2 In 1934 a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab was built, and a firefinder stood about a quarter mile south.1,3,2 Kemnow's page calls that firefinder a patrol firefinder, and it attaches the name Kresek to each date it lists.2
Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as hike-in.3 The tower was destroyed in the 1950s. The sources give only the decade, not a single year.1,3,2
The Forest Fire Lookout Association's list marks the tower as gone.4 None of the pages I checked describes what remains at the site today or whether it is open to visitors.
