View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Grass Mountain sits in Idaho County, in the Payette National Forest, at 6,262 feet.1,2

A tent camp is listed on the site in the 1920s.3 By 1934 the site had an L-4 cab, with a patrol point about three miles north at 6,090 feet.1,2,3 The site lies about 12 miles east of Chamberlain Guard Station.2

The lookout was destroyed in 1978.1,2,3 The three pages agree on those dates. Today none of the sources I checked describes what remains on the mountain, or whether the ground is open to visitors. The Idaho Fire Lookouts page labels the site as hike-in.1

Another Grass Mountain, a lookout in the Kaniksu National Forest in northern Idaho, was destroyed in 1955 and is listed separately.4
