View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Green Bonnet was a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, built in 1936 in the Kaniksu National Forest.1,2 It stood about five miles north of Upper Priest Lake in Boundary County, Idaho, at an elevation of 5,958 feet.1,2

The tower did not last past 1967.1,2 Firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts both say it was destroyed in the Trapper Peak Fire that year, and the Forest Lookouts page says it was burned in a wildfire.1,2,3 The Boundary County Museum ties the Trapper Peak Fire to lightning strikes in the northwest corner of the county.4 The museum says the fire burned for 31 days and covered roughly 16,000 acres.4

The firelookout.org list of Idaho lookouts marks Green Bonnet as gone.5 No source we read says what, if anything, remains at the site today. Idaho Fire Lookouts tags the lookout as hike-in, which is the only access detail in the sources.2
