View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.
Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Greyhound Mountain's lookout stood at 8,995 feet in the Challis National Forest, in Custer County, Idaho, about 44 miles west-northwest of Challis.1,2
Sources disagree on the first building. Firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts date an L-4 cabin to 1934.1,2 The Forest Lookouts page gives 1933 instead and describes a standard R-1 gable roof lookout house.3
The cabin was abandoned in 1946, a date all three sites agree on.1,2,3 A 1959 Coast and Geodetic Survey station description, reproduced on the Forest Lookouts page, describes a white wooden building, 20 feet on each side, roofed in green and accompanied by outbuildings. It was not in use at the time.3
Firelookout.com, Idaho Fire Lookouts and the firelookout.org list all mark the lookout as gone.1,2,4 None of the sources we read says what, if anything, remains at the site today. Idaho Fire Lookouts tags the site as a hike-in, the only access detail in the sources.2
