View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Hill 36 stood in the St. Joe National Forest, in Shoshone County, about 10 miles west-northwest of Avery, at an elevation of 4,715 feet.1

The sources record a crow's nest here in the 1930s, without a more exact date.1,2 In 1934 the site got a 10-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab.1,2 The patrol point sat on Ally Point, two miles to the southeast.1

The tower was destroyed in 1958, and both site pages agree on that year and on the 1934 tower.1,2 The association's statewide list marks the site as gone.3

We found no source that describes what, if anything, remains at the site today.1,2,3 The Idaho Fire Lookouts page calls it a hike-in, and it does not say whether the ground is open to visitors.2
