View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Hogue Mountain's lookout stood about a mile southwest of Eastport in Boundary County, on land in the Kaniksu National Forest.1,2 The site sits at 4,320 feet.1,3

The lookout was a 10-foot L-4 tower, dated 1937 by firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts.1,3

Idaho Fire Lookouts names Glenn Seeliger as a staffer in 1938, citing a Bonners Ferry Herald item from that August.3 Firelookout.com lists staff from 1944 through 1951, starting with Barbara Reuter and Margaret McNamara in 1944.1

Firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts both date the tower's destruction to 1958.1,3 Forest Lookouts lists the site as "Removed" and gives no year, so the sources disagree on how the tower ended.2

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as a hike-in.3 No source describes what remains at the site now, or whether it is open to visitors. The Idaho lookout list also marks it as gone.4
