View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.5 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Hoodoo Mountain, in Bonner County, Idaho, began its lookout history in 1923, when a cupola cabin went up on the summit.1,2,3,4 In the 1930s a tower with an L-4 cab was built.1,2,3,4 The lookout was abandoned in 1935.1,2,3,4

Idaho Fire Lookouts reports that the spot now hosts electronics, with no trace of the original lookout left.2 Two listings also tie the site to the Pend Oreille Timber Protection Association.1,2

The summit sits at 5,119 feet, and WillhiteWeb reports that tree growth has narrowed much of the view from it.4

Getting to the summit depends on a gate.4 WillhiteWeb says you can drive to the top when the gate is open, though the last miles need higher clearance.4 Whether the public may use that road is not stated on these pages.3,4
