View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Hot Springs Point stood in Idaho County, about seven miles west-southwest of Powell Ranger Station, on Clearwater National Forest land.1,2,3 The Forest Service list places it in Section 9, Township 36 North, Range 13 East.2 A cabin went up there in 1929.1,4,2,3 firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts call it an L-4 cabin, while the Forest Service list gives only "Cabin."1,4,2

The Forest Service list gives the site an elevation of 5,535 feet.2

The cabin was destroyed in 1956, a date all four sources give.1,4,2,3

Idaho Fire Lookouts files the site under its Selway region and lists it as hike-in.4 The Forest Lookouts list for Idaho County agrees on the 1929 and 1956 dates.3 Today, no source we read describes what remains at the site, or whether visitors may go there.
