View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Howe Mountain lookout stood about three miles north-northwest of Clark Fork, in the Kaniksu National Forest.1 The site is listed at 3,835 feet.2 The Forest Lookouts Idaho page gives the site code 56N-2E-21.3

The tower dates to around 1934 and carried an L-4 cab.1,2,3

A September 1937 item in the Northern Idaho News, quoted on one lookout history page, says that Floyd Hamilton was visiting home from the Howe Mountain lookout that week.3

All three sources give 1961 as the year the tower was destroyed.1,2,3

Idaho Fire Lookouts files the site under its Northern Idaho listings and lists it as a hike-in, so visitors reach it on foot.2 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains of the lookout today.
