View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Hoyt Mountain is in Shoshone County, Idaho, about six miles southwest of Avery.1 The lookout was a 50-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, built in 1934.1 The St. Joe National Forest is listed as its agency.1,2

A patrol point stood two miles west on Boulder Ridge.1,3

The Idaho Fire Lookouts page lists one known staffer, George Terrien, for the years 1940 to 1943, and notes the Former Forest Fire Lookout Registry beside his name.3

Two sources give 1956 as the year the tower was destroyed.1,3 The Forest Lookouts Idaho county inventory gives the same year but says only that the tower was "gone."2

No source we read describes what remains of the tower or the patrol point today. Idaho Fire Lookouts tags the site as drive-up, but nothing we found says whether it is open to visitors now.3
