Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Hulliman Peak lies in Shoshone County, Idaho, about 24 miles north of Wallace, in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest.1 The lookout went up in 1934 as a 30-foot pole tower carrying an L-4 cab.1,2 A crow's nest stood about a mile and a half to the north-northwest, atop a spur of Cabin Peak.1
The Idaho Fire Lookouts site lists Onnie Takkenan as staff in 1934 and Joe Rogers in 1935, and it gives L. Nemila for 1937.3 The first two entries cite Wallace Press-Times reports from June of those years.3 A Spokane Chronicle item from September 4, 1936, quoted on the Forest Lookouts page, reports that Forest Service officials recalled the lookout, since rainy, chilly weather had eased the fire risk.2
Two sources give 1964 as the year the tower was destroyed.1,3 The Forest Lookouts page gives 1963 instead.2 The tower is gone under either date.1,2 Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the peak as a hike-in site.3 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the summit, or whether the site is open to visitors.
