View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Iron Mountain lookout stood in Boundary County, in the Kaniksu National Forest.1,2,3 Both Rex Kamstra's firelookout.com page and Idaho Fire Lookouts describe a 40-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab, built in 1934.1,2

Both sites say it was destroyed in 1955.1,2 A county list on Forest Lookouts also gives 1955 for the site, with no further detail.3

Idaho Fire Lookouts gives the elevation as 6,426 feet and tags the site as hike-in.2 No source we read describes what remains at the site today, or whether the public may visit it.

At least one other Idaho lookout is also called Iron Mountain. That lookout is in Camas County and in the Sawtooth National Forest, and it is on the National Historic Lookout Register.4 That site is separate and is not covered here.
