Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Junction Mountain Lookout stands in Clearwater County, Idaho, within the Clearwater National Forest, about two miles southwest of the Kelly Creek Ranger Station.1,2 The first lookout here was an L-4 cab on a log crib base, dating to about 1931.1,2 Idaho Fire Lookouts prints that earlier date as 19341, which looks like a typo.3

The present tower went up in 1955. It is a 53-foot structure of treated lumber with an L-4 cab, and it replaced the older log crib lookout on the site.1,2,3

According to the register, the windows and lower stairs are gone.1 Sources date its abandonment to the 1970s.2,3 The register recorded the site on September 2, 2014.1

Staffing history is undocumented.3 Idaho Fire Lookouts says it does not yet have one for this tower.3 The same site lists it as a hike-in.3 No source read gives visitor access rules or a recent condition report, so check with the Clearwater National Forest before going.

Where sources disagree

We show disagreements between sources instead of quietly picking one. If you know which is right, please tell us.

  • Sources disagree on whether it still stands.

    • FFLA: Standing
    • NHLR: Standing
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: Standing
    • Idaho Fire Lookouts (idahofirelookouts.com): Gone

NHLR lists lookouts that were standing when registered. idahofirelookouts.com's status is read from a short summary.

  • Sources disagree on the year it was built.

    • NHLR: 1955
    • firelookout.com -- Rex Kamstra's Forest Fire Lookout Page: 1931

Sources give different build years. Often one counts the first lookout on the site and another the structure there now.
