View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Idaho County has two lookouts called Jungle Point.1,2 This story follows the one on the Clearwater National Forest, about 14 miles east-northeast of Kooskia, at 4,000 feet.3,1,4

Its design was an L-4 tower set half a mile southeast of the summit.3,1 Sources date it to the 1930s.3,1,4 The Clearwater National Forest list places it in section 15, township 33 North.4

All three sources list the lookout as abandoned, and two of them say it is gone.3,1,4

Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as hike-in.3 No source describes what, if anything, remains at the site today.3,1,4

The other Jungle Point is a camp on the Nez Perce National Forest, about 13 miles south-southeast of Grangeville.2 Firelookout.com dates that camp to 1930 and says it was abandoned in 1942.2 Idaho Fire Lookouts files the camp under its Selway region page, not this tower.5
