View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Jungle Point sits at 4,000 feet in the Clearwater National Forest, 14 miles east-northeast of Kooskia in Idaho County.1,2

An L-4 tower went up here in the 1930s, half a mile southeast of the summit.1,2,3 A Forest Service list compiled in June 2016 places it in Section 15, T33N, R6E.3

All three sources call the lookout abandoned, and two of them mark it gone.1,2,3

No source describes what, if anything, remains of the tower today. Idaho Fire Lookouts lists the site as hike-in, so it is reached on foot.2

Another Jungle Point, a camp on the Nez Perce National Forest that was abandoned in 1942, is a separate site.4 It lies 13 miles south-southeast of Grangeville, while this one lies 14 miles east-northeast of Kooskia.1,4
