View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

An L-4 tower was built on Lindstrom Peak in 1935.1,2,3 It stood in the St. Joe National Forest, four miles south of St. Maries, at 4,695 feet.1,2 The Forest Lookouts page describes it as a tower with an L-4 cab and credits the detail to Kresek.3

The sources disagree on the county. The Forest Lookouts page lists the peak under Benewah County.3 Firelookout.com gives Shoshone County, Idaho, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list also places the peak in Shoshone County.1,4

Firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts both note a patrol tower about a mile to the southeast.1,2 The tower was destroyed in 1965, the same year on all three pages.1,2,3

No source I read describes what, if anything, is left at the site today. Idaho Fire Lookouts tags the site Drive-Up, but no source says whether the public may visit it.2
