View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Linfor Hill stands about six miles northwest of Kellogg, in Shoshone County, Idaho, within the Coeur d'Alene National Forest.1 A 30-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab went up there in 1934.1,2,3
A 20-foot platform on Thomas Hill, about a mile to the southeast, served as a patrol point for the Linfor tower.1,2,4
John Gunn is the only lookout the sources name, for 1944.1,2
The sources disagree about how the tower ended. Firelookout.com says the tower was put up for public sale and taken down in 1950.1 Idaho Fire Lookouts says that year it was either taken down or burned.2 The Weebly list records it as gone by 1950, and the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Idaho list marks it gone as well.3,5
Idaho Fire Lookouts reports that a visit turned up cement footings and tie-downs, and otherwise only the view.2 The site is listed as hike-in, which means it is reached on foot.2 No source says whether the ground is open to visitors or what rules apply there.1,2
The Thomas Hill platform has toppled, yet its concrete footings, pole legs and railings all remain identifiable.4
