View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.4 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Little Grass Lookout stood in the Kaniksu National Forest in Bonner County, Idaho, 10 miles north-northwest of Nordman, at 5,696 feet.1 All three sites we read say it was built in 1934 as a 50-foot pole tower of the L-4 type.1,2,3

The three sites agree that the tower was destroyed in 1960.1,2,3 The Forest Lookouts page marks it as removed.3 It lists the location code 62N-5W-5 and attributes its dates to a source named Kresek.3

None of the sources we read describes what remains at the site today. The Idaho Fire Lookouts page files the site as "Hike-In," which suggests it is reached on foot, but it gives no route.2 We found no source that says whether the site is open to the public.
