View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Little Green Mountain, 19 miles north-northeast of Orofino in Clearwater County, Idaho, had a lookout built in 1933.1,2 The tower was 74 feet tall and of the L-6 type, and the site sits at 4,741 feet.1,2

A log cabin is listed at the site in 1936.1,2 The site is listed under the Clearwater Timber Protective Association (CTPA).1,3 Forest Lookouts records repairs to the tower in 1954, citing a combined annual report for 1953-54.3

firelookout.com reports the 1936 log cabin as surviving in ruins, though the page gives no date for that observation.1 The sources do not say whether the tower itself still stands. Idaho Fire Lookouts files the site as drive-up, which suggests a road reaches it, but it gives no route.2 We found no source that says whether the site is open to the public.
