View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Lochsa Peak lookout stood about two miles south of the Lochsa Ranger Station, in Idaho County on the Clearwater National Forest.1,2 The first structure, from 1930, was an observatory built in the cut-off top of a fir tree about 65 feet up.3,2 The L-4 cab that most sources describe went on an 8-foot log crib in 1931, though one account says the whole lookout dates to 1930.1,3,4,2

Earnest Hartman and Harry Chenoweth are the staff named for 1930, the only year Idaho Fire Lookouts lists names.5 Staffing continued each season through 1941; the site was abandoned after that.3,2

Flooring and usable lumber were recovered and taken to the Lochsa Ranger Station; the rest was set on fire.2 Louis Hartig's history places the burning in the early 1950s,3 while the Forest Service post that quotes his text gives 1953.2 Four current sources list the lookout as gone.1,5,4,6

None of the sources we read describes what, if anything, remains on the site today, or whether the public may visit it.1,5 The Lochsa Historical Ranger Station, on U.S. Highway 12, served as the administrative base for the lookouts and was designated an interpretive site in 1976.7 Its listed 2026 season ran from May 23 to September 1.7
