Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Lone Pine Lookout was a 30-foot pole patrol tower in Idaho County, about six miles southwest of the Moose Creek Ranger Station.1,2

Most sources date the tower to 1934.1,2,3,4 An undated inventory of lookouts on the Moose Creek Ranger District, quoted by the Forest Lookouts site, instead gives 1932 for a 30-foot tower with an L-4 cab. We have not settled which year is right.4

The tower was abandoned in 1950.2,3,4 According to the Forest Lookouts site, the site passed from the Bitterroot to the Nez Perce National Forest in 1957.4 Other listings name the Nez Perce as the forest today.1,2,3

The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the tower as gone.5 No source we read describes what, if anything, remains at the site, or whether it is open to visitors. Anyone planning a visit should ask the Nez Perce National Forest first.
