View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.2 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

McGary Butte, in Latah County about eight miles west of Elk River, got a 50-foot pole tower with an L-4 cab in 1935.1,2,3 The operator is named two ways. The Forest Lookouts page gives the Potlatch Timber Protective Association,3 while firelookout.com and Idaho Fire Lookouts list only the initials CTPA.1,2

In July 1939 the lookout reported a fire on a bridge along the Three Bear main line.3 A story from The Family Tree, a Potlatch Forests newspaper and reprinted on the Forest Lookouts page, says the fire destroyed seven bents, the framed supports of the bridge, and burned for over six hours.3 On July 21 the bridge was complete, and the first log train crossed it again.3

The tower received extensive repairs in 1960, according to the Potlatch Timber Protective Association's annual report.3 It was destroyed in 1970.1,2,3 The state index lists the site as gone.4
