View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Midget lookout stood on Midget Peak in the St. Joe National Forest, in Shoshone County, Idaho.1,2,3 The sources date its first structures to 1929, when a cabin and a platform tower stood on the peak's west point.1,2 Materials for an L-4 cab, a 14-by-14-foot prefabricated live-in cabin design, were on site from 1941, but the cab was never built.1,2,4

The sources disagree about when the lookout was abandoned. The Forest Fire Lookout Association gives 1958, while Idaho Fire Lookouts gives 1942.1,2 Idaho Fire Lookouts' September 2022 post says the platform tower was still standing as of 2019. It also says the Stateline Fire of summer and fall 2021 tore through the area and left the site completely burned.2

When the post's writers reached the site, they found the platform tower in ruins, along with rubbish from the 1930s and 1940s, including a grub plate, a coffee pot and a tobacco tin.2 They found no sign of the material meant for the cab that was never built.2 The hike turned out to be about 3.5 miles, not the 2 miles they had expected.2 The 2022 visit report is the only detailed account of the site after 2019, and none of the three sources says whether the public may go there now.1,2,3
